How to Erase a Memory from the Yaesu FT-2900R

Yaesu FT-2900R
I know how to use the "SKIP" feature.
I know I can over write the memory location.

I want to know how to ERASE the memory data
from a given memory location.

Is it possible?? I cannot find it in the manual.

You want to erase just one memory location and leave the other ones alone?

Answer :
You can't do it through the radio's front panel UI. Apparently Yaesu thinks it's good enough to mark the channels as "skip", and to be able to overwrite it when needed. I more-or-less agree with them, though the lack of "delete" ability is somewhat annoying.

You can do it through the free CHIRP software, by downloading the radio image into your computer, deleting the memory in CHIRP, and uploading the resulting image back to the radio. The FT-2900 is only supported in recent daily builds of CHIRP (I wrote the CHIRP FT-2900 driver a few weeks ago). If you're interested, download a daily build from chirp.danplanet.com .

For what it's worth, even the factory reset procedure as documented in the manual doesn't completely erase the memory either. It does mark some bits in the memory to show that the memory is invalid, so the radio's front panel UI behaves exactly as though the data were erased, but the actual frequency and tone setting data is still there, unaltered. You can't recover the information through the radio's front panel, but if you download an image of the radio into CHIRP (or perhaps other software), the channel info is stored in the image file. That's probably not cause for any concern, but...

  1. Yaesu design is flawed if you can't delete a channel. I will be purchasing a ICOM or Kenwood. Screw Yaesu...!
